What Makes Shredding Truly Secure?

True secure shredding involves far more than just putting paper through a machine. It requires a complete chain of custody from collection to destruction, with rigorous security measures at every stage.

Many organisations rely on basic office shredders or standard waste collection, but these methods leave your data vulnerable. Office shredders typically produce strip-cut output that can be reassembled, while waste collectors offer no guarantee of destruction.

Shredsec’s secure shredding service eliminates these risks through:

Secure Collection and Transport

Our vehicles are GPS-tracked and driven by ID-carrying operatives. Materials from different customers are kept separate.

Controlled Destruction

Shredding takes place either at your premises in our specialist mobile shredding vehicles, or at our secure facility for off-site destruction. Either way, your documents are destroyed under controlled conditions with no possibility of compromise.

Industrial Cross-Cut Shredders

Unlike strip-cut shredders that produce ribbons which could potentially be reconstructed, our industrial cross-cut machines reduce documents to confetti-sized particles (maximum 4mm x 30mm). This is equivalent to DIN Level 3 security – the minimum recommended standard for confidential business documents.

Full Audit Trail

We maintain detailed records of every collection and destruction. You receive a Certificate of Destruction for every job, documenting:

  • Date and time of collection
  • Date and time of destruction
  • Weight of material processed
  • Security level achieved
  • Unique job reference number

This provides documented proof for compliance, audits, and regulatory requirements.

Types of Secure Shredding

Cross-Cut Shredding

Cross-cut shredders use two contra-rotating cutting cylinders to slice paper in two directions simultaneously. This produces small rectangular particles that are virtually impossible to reassemble. All Shredsec shredding uses cross-cut technology.

Particle size: Maximum 4mm x 30mm (DIN Level 3) Security level: Suitable for confidential business documents, personal data, financial records

Strip-cut shredders produce long ribbons the length of the original document. While better than no shredding, determined criminals have successfully reconstructed strip-cut documents. We do not use strip-cut shredding.

Micro-Cut Shredding

For highly sensitive material requiring the highest security levels (DIN 4, 5, or 6), micro-cut shredding produces even smaller particles. This is typically required for government, military, or highly classified commercial documents.

Secure Shredding Standards

Shredsec operates to the highest industry standards:

BS EN 15713 The European Code of Practice for Secure Destruction of Confidential Materials. This standard covers the entire destruction process including staff vetting, secure premises, collection procedures, destruction methods, and environmental disposal.

DIN 66399 / DIN 32757 The European standard for shredder security levels. Shredsec operates at Level P-3 (formerly DIN Level 3) as standard, producing particles no larger than 4mm x 30mm.

BS7858 The British standard for security screening of personnel. All Shredsec staff are vetted to this standard before handling confidential materials.

What Documents Need Secure Shredding?

Any document containing information that could identify individuals or harm your organisation if disclosed requires secure shredding:

Personal data (UK GDPR requirement):

  • Employee records and personnel files
  • Customer or client information
  • Medical and health records
  • Financial details (bank accounts, salaries)
  • National Insurance numbers
  • Contact details and addresses

Commercial confidential:

  • Business plans and strategies
  • Financial accounts and forecasts
  • Sales and marketing data
  • Pricing information
  • Supplier contracts
  • Board minutes and papers
  • Research and development

Professional records:

  • Legal case files
  • Patient records
  • Student information
  • Tax documents
  • Insurance records

Benefits of Secure Shredding

The Data Protection Act and UK GDPR require organisations to dispose of personal data securely. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) can issue fines up to £17.5 million for serious breaches. Secure shredding with a Certificate of Destruction demonstrates compliance.

Data Breach Prevention

Data breaches cost UK businesses an average of £3.4 million per incident. Beyond financial penalties, breaches damage reputation and customer trust. Secure shredding eliminates the risk of confidential documents being recovered from waste.

Identity Theft Protection

Identity fraud affects nearly 2 million UK people annually, often starting with documents recovered from bins. Professional shredding protects your employees, customers, and your organisation from becoming sources of stolen identities.

Time and Cost Savings

Office shredders are slow (5-10 sheets per minute vs our 1000kg per hour), require staff time, need maintenance, and produce lower security output. Outsourcing to a professional shredding company is typically more cost-effective.

Environmental Responsibility

All material shredded by Shredsec is recycled into new paper products. Nothing goes to landfill. Your organisation gains environmental credentials while meeting data protection requirements.
